A Simple GUide to Pinterest Character Counts

A Simple Guide to Pinterest Character Count Maximums

The Importance of Making Every Word Work for You

Whether you’re just starting fresh on Pinterest or you’re a seasoned Pinner refining your strategy, this guide is here to serve you.

Pinterest has specific limits when it comes to writing meaningful content. But these spaces—your profile, boards, and Pins—aren’t just for words; they provide crucial context for both the Pinner and the Pinterest algorithm. When you thoughtfully incorporate keywords throughout your account, you help increase impressions, followers, and ultimately, traffic to your website.

Want to make sure every word is working for you? Let’s dive in.

Say More in Your Pinterest Profile (and Use It to Your Advantage!)

At this writing, you have up to 500 characters to craft your Bio (a.k.a. About Statement or Profile Description) under your Pinterest Public Profile settings. That’s a lot more than the 160-character limit from years past—so use it wisely!

Why does this matter? More space means more opportunity to tell your story, share your mission, and (most importantly) weave in strategic keywords that help the algorithm understand what you offer. Think of keywords as breadcrumbs leading Pinners straight to your content.

👉 Tip: Be natural with keyword placement—no keyword stuffing! Your bio should feel authentic while still being optimized for search.

Push the Limits on Character Count Maximums

It used to be that your Profile Name was capped at just 30 characters—barely enough to say hello! Now, you have up to 65 characters to work with. This is a great place to blend your name, your niche, and keywords to make your profile both searchable and compelling.

đź›  Example: Instead of just “Frieda Creates,” you might say: Frieda Creates | Pinterest Marketing for Artists

💡 Did you know? Pinterest is constantly evolving, and character count limits sometimes vary depending on your device. If you’re on mobile, test the boundaries—especially when creating from an iPhone. (Android users, if you discover any surprises, share in the comments!)

Pinterest Boards: The SEO Powerhouses

Boards aren’t just where you save Pins—they’re foundational for Pinterest SEO. They give context to your content, working alongside your profile and Pins to help the algorithm connect the dots.

When setting up new boards, aim for 5–10 boards centered around a primary topic (e.g., Acrylic Painting). Then, research related keywords and use them in:

âś… Your board names (50-character max)
âś… Your board descriptions (500-character max)
âś… The Pins you save to them

By doing this, you’re essentially training the algorithm to recognize your content and surface it to the right people. SEO in action!

đź“ť Tip: Keep board names clear and searchable (e.g., “Acrylic Painting Techniques” instead of “My Happy Painting Place”).

What About Pins? (Yes, Titles & Descriptions Matter!)

If you’re wondering how much text you can squeeze into your Pins, here’s the breakdown:

  • Pin Titles: Up to 100 characters
  • Pin Descriptions: Up to 500 characters

Your Pin title should be attention-grabbing and keyword-rich—think of it like the headline of an article. Meanwhile, your Pin description provides extra context and should include strong calls to action (“Click to read more!” or “Shop the collection now.”).

What About Idea Pins?

Idea Pins (Pinterest’s multi-page, no-link format) follow similar character limits:

  • Title: 100 characters
  • Text on Page (iOS): Up to 250 characters per text box
  • Text on Page (Android/Desktop): One text box per page

💡 Pinterest’s current push? Authentic, straight-from-your-phone content. They want to see you sharing your ideas—especially in video form. (Eek! I’m working on embracing this myself. More soon!)
